Chocolate Daisy, also known as Berlandiera or Chocolate Drop, is a perennial plant that thrives in zone 4. The species features edible flowers that emit a cocoa-like aroma, most pronounced in the morning. Resembling coreopsis, the plant blooms from spring to fall, with the peak bloom period in late June. Regularly picking the flowers encourages more blooms, and they can be used as cut flowers or garnish. This rare species grows between 1 to 2 feet in well-drained, lean soil and should not be planted in wet or heavy clay sites. Starting seeds in pots in early spring for later transplanting is recommended.
